Title: Chinese Export Porcelain from the Museum of Antastácio Gonςalves, Lisbon

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to bring back to the Old world the rare and fragile porcelains of China, at the beginning of the sixteenth century. They created a demand for this precious material and trade intensified, leading to the growth of private collections that would define the power and taste of monarchs, prelates and aristocrats. Antastácio Gonςalves was a true scion of this long tradition of patronage, devoting his life to Chinese porcelain. His collection includes many extremely rare items and is well known internationally, to both specialists and art lovers.
